The April 7 School Board Election

The new Mercer School Board has been making slow but steady progress in cleaning up the administrative mess left behind by former Administrator Erik Torkelson.  This is not the time to reverse this progress by electing two people to the board – Deanna Pierpont and Brian Baltz –who want to bring Torkelson back as administrator.

The April 7 school board election will give Mercer voters five choices to fill three school board positions.  The three who MUST be elected are: SUE LOTH, JEFF NEHRING AND HENRY (HANK) JOUSTRA.  The two who MUST NOT be elected are:  DEANNA PIERPONT AND BRIAN BALTZ.

Loth and Nehring were appointed to the board last spring to fill vacant positions.  They have been working diligently along with Board President Bob Davis and Jim Hannemann to fix the school’s misused finances and poor academic performance and to set a positive course.

Joustra is president of the Mercer Chamber of Commerce and the Mercer Sno-Goers.  He operates a plumbing and heating business.

Pierpont was on the school board during Torkelson’s eight-year reign of mismanagement and misspending.  She supported him every step of the way. She chose last April not to seek re-election (she probably would have been beaten anyway) but now she is attempting a come-back in order to bring back Torkelson.  Torkelson has been on medical leave since last June but has told people that he is ready to return to his former position.

Baltz is also a known staunch supporter, friend and ally of Torkelson.  He was the best man at Torkelson’s marriage to Joy Kohegyi, daughter of former school board member Kelly Kohegyi.  Torkelson also gave him lucrative contracts for questionable teaching programs.  Baltz must lack confidence in the Mercer school because one of school-age children is enrolled elsewhere.

In the April 7 election, the two candidates receiving the most votes will fill three-year terms.  The third candidate in line with the number of votes will receive a one-year term.

If you want to see continued progress in working to improve the school’s abysmal academic results, eliminate wasteful spending of you school tax dollars and restore honesty and transparency, then vote for Sue Loth, Jeff Nehring and Henry Joustra.

But If you want to return the Mercer School District to the  humiliating position as  the worse school in the state (the DPI school report card score placed Mercer in the 421st position, very last in the state) and the highest cost-per-student school in Wisconsin (Mercer $25,097, state average 13,505), then vote for Deanna Pierpont and Brian Baltz.

  1. Agree, vote for Hank, Jeff, and Sue!

  2. ABOVE THE LAW. It’s well known that following rules and regulations mean nothing to the Deanna Pierpont gang. But a picture which has surfaced showing a gathering at the town park with Pierpont, Kelly Kohegyi and others drives home the point. The gathering is in direct violation of Governor Evers’ stay- at- home order. This is an extremely bad example to set for Mercer students by Pierpont, who wants to be elected to the school board in Tuesday’s election. Just another reason not to vote for her.

  3. In a three-hour closed session during Thursday night’s Mercer School Board meeting, the board “took no action”... "to discuss “administrator (Erik Torkelson) leave status, and to potentially take action regarding same”. This was one of many closed sessions when the board discussed his leave status without taking any action.

  4. PLEASE vote for any of the school board candidates except Pierpont. She was Torkelson’s accomplice in denying the kids of a needed education while allowing taxpayer dollars to be misused and turning up missing.
